There is a misconception that press releases will get you on a journalist’s radar and lead to a story in a newspaper or a segment on TV. In fact, it’s just the opposite.

Sales people at press release distribution companies may promise you news coverage, but these PR newswires only promote impressions. Many newsrooms head to actual newswires – like the Associated Press, Reuters, and Bloomberg – as the first source for news and ideas.

Reporters are already bombarded with ideas from publicists, news sources, editors, readers/viewers, etc. What reporters need are curated editorial ideas. An active media outreach with reporters is a crucial component behind every successful media campaign. This is why press releases cannot replace the need for a PR firm.
